Description
Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine indicated for the treatment of anxiety and panic-related conditions. It acts on the central nervous system and is intended for use only under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional because of its risks for sedation, misuse, dependence, and withdrawal reactions.

Indications
Alprazolam tablets are indicated for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, according to current labeling.

Dosage & Administration
Dosage should be individualized based on indication, clinical response, and tolerability. For GAD, labeled starting doses are typically 0.25 mg to 0.5 mg three times daily, with a usual maximum of 4 mg/day in divided doses. For panic disorder, dosing is determined by the prescriber and should be titrated carefully. Therapy should use the lowest effective dose, and discontinuation should be gradual to reduce withdrawal risk.

Mechanism of Action
Alprazolam enhances the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, producing anxiolytic, sedative, and central nervous system depressant effects.

Precautions
Alprazolam carries boxed warnings for concomitant use with opioids, as well as abuse, misuse, addiction, dependence, and withdrawal reactions. It should be used with caution in elderly patients and in those with respiratory compromise, hepatic impairment, depression, or a history of substance misuse. Patients should avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants unless specifically directed by a prescriber.

Side Effects
Common adverse effects may include drowsiness, lightheadedness, fatigue, dizziness, impaired coordination, and speech or concentration difficulties. Serious adverse reactions can include significant sedation, respiratory depression when combined with other depressants, and withdrawal-related complications if the drug is stopped abruptly.

Storage
Store alprazolam tablets at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Protect from light and dispense/store in a tight, light-resistant, child-resistant container. Keep out of reach of children.
